HED Consulting was formed in 2008 and provides specialist advice on household and small enterprise energy for developing countries, with a focus on improved cooking stoves. Specific activities include:
- monitoring and evaluating improved cook stoves and programs;
- understanding and overcoming socioeconomic barriers to adoption;
- project and fieldwork management and design;
- undertaking baseline surveys and monitoring for Gold Standard
and small scale CDM projects; - non-renewable biomass (NRB) studies;
- designing and delivering training on project evaluation and participatory fieldwork.
HED Consulting is well networked within the international community of household energy practitioners, researchers and funders. It is an active member of the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA) and the HEDON Household Energy Network. This year Jonathan has lectured at the University of Brescia, Italy, presented to the HEDON London Regional Interest, and led workshops in Bangladesh for the World Bank. In 2009 Jonathan attended the biannual PCIA forum in Uganda, where he presented the WHO Catalogue of Evaluation Methods, and attended the UNFCCC NRB Practitioners Workshop in Bonn, Germany, giving a presentation on 'The emissions reductions - indoor air pollution paradox'.
Since its inception, HED Consulting has worked with C02 Balance UK, C-Quest Capital LLC, JP Morgan Climate Care, Practical Action Consulting and Berkeley Air Monitoring Group.
Director, Jonathan Rouse, brings with him experience of working with a wide range of other clients including the World Health Organisation, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, DfID, USAID, the Shell Foundation, the Center for Entrepreneurship in International Health and Development (CEIHD) (now Impact Carbon), and the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA). HED Consulting's Associates add substantially to this list, including UNICEF, Concern and Forest Trends.

- Designed kitchen tests and surveys to understand cooking behaviour and fuel-use patterns;
- Recruited and trained local team in Bangladesh to undertake fieldwork.
Madagascar: Ethanol as a Household Fuel. Health Benefits, Economic Assessment and
Review of African Lessons for Scaling-Up. World Bank-funded research, managed by
Practical Action Consulting. 2008-present.
- Provided input on surveyors training tools and questionnaire design;
- Reviewed role of public and private sectors in household energy programs with a focus on ethanol.
